After reports that the Trump Administration will end Consumer Financial Protection Bureau examinations of lenders to check for violations of the Military Lending Act (MLA), Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter joined House Armed Services Committee Democrats in writing to CFPB Director Mulveney urging him to stop this change in practice and instead continue enforcing the MLA. The MLA was passed in 2006 with bipartisan support to address predatory lending practices that target servicemembers.

WASHINGTON — The military is seeing significantly lower levels of opioid abuse and use as it installs a series of reforms in the midst of a drug epidemic that has gripped the nation, two service health officials told lawmakers.

Less than 1 percent of active-duty servicemembers are abusing or addicted to opioids and its rate of deadly overdoses is a quarter of the national average, Vice Adm. Raquel C. Bono, director of the Defense Health Agency, told a House panel Wednesday.
