Shea-Porter Announces Support for Russia Sanctions Deal
ROCHESTER, NH — Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter (NH-01) on Sunday announced her support for a bipartisan, bicameral deal on Russia sanctions legislation, which is expected to come before the House for a vote on Tuesday. Shea-Porter has long called for sanctions on Russia in response to the country's interference in the 2016 elections.
"I have repeatedly called for quick action on tough sanctions, and I am pleased that the House and Senate have come to a bipartisan agreement on Russia sanctions to hold Putin accountable for his attacks on democracy, and specifically for his hostile interference in our 2016 election,” said Shea-Porter. "The bill both houses will send to the President’s desk next week delivers a strong message to Vladimir Putin and his friends: the United States will not tolerate, much less reward, their aggression.”
Earlier this month, Shea-Porter urged Republican House leadership to allow a vote on sanctions legislation ahead of President Trump's meeting with Vladimir Putin at a G-20 summit. As part of her work to hold Russia accountable for its interference in the 2016 presidential election as well as in other democracies worldwide, Shea-Porter has cosponsored both the Russia Sanctions Review Act and the SECURE Our Democracy Act. She also co-introduced bipartisan legislation to create an independent commission to investigate Russia's actions during the 2016 campaign, and in December 2016 prior to her return to Congress she led 40 Electoral College members in demanding a briefing on Russian interference.
