Shea-Porter Condemns Trump’s Decision to Withdraw U.S. From Paris Climate Agreement

June 2, 2017
Press Release

Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter (NH-01) released the following statement after President Trump announced his intent to withdraw the United States from the Paris Climate Agreement:

“Today President Trump made a historic and calamitous error to ignore the majority of the American people and the overwhelming majority of scientists who agree that humans are contributing to climate change and we must act before it’s too late. Princeton Professor of Geosciences and International Affairs Michael Oppenheimer said yesterday this decision makes it ‘far more likely that we will breach the danger limit of 3.6 degrees’ after which atmospheric changes are irreversible. Climate change is a global threat that requires an international solution, and the President’s decision to abandon an agreement signed by every country in the world except Syria and Nicaragua will alienate our allies, who are already questioning American leadership after the President’s recent comments abroad. While today’s shameful decision will have serious repercussions, it should also strengthen our resolve to work for a better future and create conditions to rejoin the Paris Climate Agreement as quickly as possible.”
