Shea-Porter Statement on House Immigration Vote
WASHINGTON, DC— Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter (NH-01) today released the following statement after joining House Democrats and 112 House Republicans in voting “no” on House Republican Leadership’s partisan immigration bill, which failed 121-301:
“This bill was a profound betrayal of American values. It would have eliminated protections for asylum seekers while slamming the door shut on people who are already trying to navigate the legal immigration system. The bill would have removed basic protections for detained families and extended their confinement, while doing nothing to stop the administration from putting refugee children in prisons. Unbelievably, this bill would have created a ‘points’ system for those seeking to legally immigrate to the U.S., including DREAMers. This would have forced DREAMers to compete with everyone else trying to immigrate in order to stay in the only place they’ve ever called home.
“President Trump ended protections for DREAMers. He initiated the policy to rip babies from their parents’ arms and put them in jail. House Republicans are flailing to find a solution to the multiple immigration crises their party created while they held DREAMers and innocent children hostage to secret negotiations, which have only included other Republicans in Congress and the White House. It sickens me that the White House created truly heinous policies so they could use them as negotiating chips to encourage passage of a disgusting bill that will ruin even more people’s lives. House Republican leadership did not hold a single hearing or markup on this bill. They negotiated it in secret right up to the moment they failed to pass it. Their conduct on this issue has been shameful!”
