Shea-Porter Statement on House Minibus Appropriations Bill

June 8, 2018
Press Release

WASHINGTON, DC— Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter (NH-01) today released the following statement after voting ‘no’ on House Republicans’ partisan “Minibus” appropriations package:

“The bill directly attacks clean water programs and encourages the pollution of our oceans. It includes an extreme policy provision that would gut clean water safeguards by repealing the Clean Water Rule, which prohibits coal companies from dumping coal ash into rivers and streams. The bill would also allow the Army Corps of Engineers to dump dirty dredge material directly into coastal waters. For fragile industries like New Hampshire’s lobster fishery, the introduction of dirty dredge material onto the seafloor could prove catastrophic. Around the nation, and especially in New Hampshire, we are dealing with water contamination issues that are threatening public health. At a time when Granite Staters are unsure of how safe their water is, I could not vote for a bill that could jeopardize New Hampshire’s drinking water. The bill has a lot of good funding for our veterans, but it sickens me that once again, House Republicans want to hold that funding hostage and attempt to force Members to choose between adequately funding veterans programs and standing up for the health and safety of our neighbors.”
