Shea-Porter Statement on Manafort Conviction
DOVER, NH— Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter released the following statement after a jury convicted former Trump Campaign Chairman Paul Manafort on eight felony charges.
“The Mueller investigation has now led to the conviction of former Trump Campaign Chairman Paul Manafort on eight felony counts. Former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn has pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI, and former Trump Transition official and campaign aid Rick Gates pleaded guilty, as well. The Department of Justice has indicted 26 Russian nationals for their role in hacking Democratic entities. And Trump campaign foreign policy advisor George Papadopoulos pleaded guilty, too.
“This investigation is working to uncover both the facts about Russian interference in the 2016 elections and any crimes committed by members of President Trump’s inner circle. This is our justice system working to protect the US and our democracy, and it must be allowed to proceed without political interference. Speaker Ryan must acknowledge these mounting convictions and bring legislation to the Floor to protect Special Counsel Mueller’s investigation.”
Shea-Porter has cosponsored legislation to protect Special Counsel Mueller and has signed a discharge petition to bring that legislation to the floor, which House Republicans have refused to do. In June, she called on President Trump to step down after his comments at the Helsinki Summit where he refused to stand up to Russian President Putin on the world stage regarding Russia’s efforts to interfere in the election.
