Shea-Porter Statement on Second Trump Travel Ban
WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter (NH-01) released the following statement after President Trump issued a second executive order denying refugees and foreign students entry into the United States:
“Today President Trump issued a second travel ban after federal courts rejected his first attempt. I believe the new travel ban, like the first, is outrageous, immoral, and unconstitutional. Since the first travel ban, a Department of Homeland Security assessment has made it clear this approach will do nothing to make us safer. Instead, it risks putting our troops in danger, alienating our allies, and fueling anti-American propaganda. I will continue to oppose this and any blanket travel ban targeting Muslim-majority countries and to work on behalf of New Hampshire’s refugees, immigrants, and foreign students.”
BACKGROUND
- In January, Shea-Porter joined colleagues and constituents on the front steps of the Supreme Court to call on President Trump to reverse his executive order and spoke out in support of New Hampshire’s refugees, permanent residents and foreign students.
- Shea-Porter and over 100 of her House colleagues introduced a bill, the Statute of Liberty Values (SOLVE) Act of 2017, that would revoke and defund President Trump’s initial travel ban.
- Shea-Porter pressed witnesses at a House Armed Services Committee hearing, “The State of the World: National Security Threats and Challenges,” on how the first travel ban could impact our national security by undermining regional alliances, fueling ISIS propaganda, and making it harder for local interpreters to safely assist U.S. troops.
