Shea-Porter: Trump’s Executive Order will Harm Children

June 20, 2018
Press Release

WASHINGTON, DC— Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter (NH-01) today released the following statement on the executive order President Trump signed today:

“President Trump’s actions today prove that for weeks, he and his administration have lied to the American people. Mr. Trump said Congress needed to stop this, but we’ve known all along that it was the president who created this brutal policy, and he was the one that kept it in place. For the last several weeks, he has held these innocent children hostage in prisons as bargaining chips in his calculating attempt to force Congress to fund his border wall. I am horrified that under this executive order children will be indefinitely imprisoned in facilities such as abandoned Walmarts and tent cities, in the stifling Texas heat. This will continue causing long-term and irreparable harm to innocent children. It is clear from the incredible public response that the American people will not go along with President Trump’s despicable treatment of immigrant children. Jailing babies is cruel and barbaric. Throwing their parents in the cages with them is still immoral. Some parents are already deported and may never see their little ones again. President Trump must apologize, cease, and desist now. This executive order fails to do that.”
